Functional trainers are a new breed of home gym that have several advantages over your classic home gyms. These advantages mean you will use them and get more exercise. That's why you would buy one in the first place, right?

The 1st Advantage: Simple Design.

They are simple, by design. Whether you're starting a new exercise program, or you've been exercising for years, you can quickly figure out how to use a functional trainer.

Exercise machines often look intimidating. Although a brand-new exerciser will need some guidance along their new path, most will find a functional trainer to be more self-explanatory than older home gyms.

You can start with a few basic exercises. There is often a chart, demonstrating basic exercises, which either comes with the equipment or is glued to it. After you feel comfortable using the machine, you can quickly add more exercises to your work-out.

The 2nd Advantage: Compact Size.

Unlike their predecessors, the simpler design of today's functional trainers makes them more compact. They take up less space in your home.

The height setting for the cable also gives you more exercise options. If you set the cable down low, you will probably use an ankle strap for leg exercises. You can also keep it low for shoulder, back, and arm exercises. You can set the cable high and work the same muscles in their opposite directions for a totally different work-out!

The 4th Advantage: Price.

No lies here: you probably won't find a good functional trainer for under a thousand dollars. But compare this to older home gyms and see the value.

Most home gyms will cost you the same amount. But you can do fewer exercises on the classic home gyms, compared to the more versatile functional trainers. Same cost, more exercises. So, obviously, the trainers are the better value.

If this is your first purchase of a home gym, or your first 'real' investment in exercise equipment, then you'll enjoy owning a functional trainer.
